Gastronomy: Delicious Discoveries

In Abu Dhabi, culinary adventurers can embark on a flavorful journey, experiencing a rich tapestry of flavors and aromas. For those with a proclivity for traditional Emirati dishes, starting with Al Harees is a must, a delightful dish made with just wheat, chicken, and a pinch of salt, predominantly enjoyed during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

Another unmissable dish is Al Majboos, tantalizingly seasoned with a blend of spices, boiled with saffron-infused water, and slow-cooked to allow the flavors to meld perfectly. The succulent pieces of meat, usually chicken or fish, coupled with the aromatic rice, render this dish a flavorful masterpiece.

For seafood aficionados, the Hamour dish is a revelation, consisting of locally caught grouper fish seasoned and served with rice or flatbread. It’s a dish that symbolizes the coastal heritage of the Emirates.

Sampling Shawarma is indispensable while in Abu Dhabi. This popular street food is made from skewered meat, usually lamb or chicken, grilled to perfection, and served in a wrap or a flatbread, usually accompanied by pickles, tomatoes, and garlic sauce, making it a delightful quick bite.

Camel Meat is a unique offering, available in various forms, from stews to grills, providing a distinctive taste experience, reflecting the authentic desert traditions. It is lean and rich in flavor, and is often served with rice.

No culinary tour would be complete without indulging in sweet treats, and Luqaimat should be on every foodie’s list. These deep-fried dough balls, crispy on the outside and soft inside, are drizzled with date syrup and sprinkled with sesame seeds, rendering them an irresistibly sweet end to any meal.

To wash down these flavorful dishes, Tamar Hindi, a refreshing tamarind-based drink, or Qamardeen, a sweet apricot drink, are popular traditional beverages, offering a sweet and tangy experience, capturing the essence of the region’s fruits.

Camel Milk, rich in nutrients and flavors, is another beverage to try. It’s a staple in the Emirati diet and can be enjoyed plain or flavored, offering insights into the everyday life of the locals.

Do not miss out on Arabian Coffee, known as Gahwa, a symbol of hospitality in Emirati culture. The unique blend of coffee beans, cardamom, and saffron offer a delightful aroma and distinctive taste, usually accompanied by dates, serving as an excellent introduction or conclusion to any meal.

Transportation and getting around the city

When you land at Abu Dhabi International Airport, you've got a few options to reach the city center. The Airport taxis are super convenient, and they’re available 24/7 just outside the arrivals hall. They're metered, so no stress about negotiating fares.

If you’re looking to save some bucks, there are buses – look for the A1 buses. They operate around the clock and are available every 40 minutes or so, and the fare is super affordable.

Within the city, public transport is your friend. Buses are pretty reliable and cover most parts of the city. Just grab a Hafilat card from any bus station, top it up, and you're good to go. Also, a lot of places are connected by air-conditioned walkways to beat the heat, especially around the downtown area.

Taxis are everywhere, and they are pretty reasonably priced if you compare them to other major cities. Plus, they’re a good option when you’re not sure about the bus routes or if you’re short on time. You can hail them on the street or book them using ride-hailing apps like Careem or Uber.

If you're staying around the central district, you'll find it's pretty walking-friendly, especially around the Corniche, where you have those stunning sea views, plenty of parks, and cafes to chill at.

For a super laid-back and scenic way to see the city, hop-on hop-off buses are a great option. You can catch these at various stops around the city, and tickets are available directly on the bus or online. Just search for "Abu Dhabi hop-on hop-off bus tickets," and you'll find several options to choose from. It’s an easy way to get to places like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Emirates Palace, and the malls without having to navigate public transport.

Have fun exploring Abu Dhabi, it’s got a mix of tradition and modernity and there’s plenty to see and do!
