Transportation and getting around the city

Landing in Athens, you'll find a bunch of options to get you to the city center. The Metro is pretty straightforward; line 3 is the one you need. It’ll whisk you off to the city center in about 40 minutes, and a one-way ticket costs around €10. If you’re not in the mood to navigate the metro after your flight, there are always buses—look for the X95. It's cheaper than the metro, and it takes a bit longer, around 60 minutes, but hey, you'll get to see a bit of the city on your way!

Once you're in the city, public transport is a breeze. The tickets are fairly cheap, and they’re good for the buses, trolleys, and the metro. You can get them at any metro station and a lot of the kiosks around town. A 90-minute ticket should do the trick for most journeys and it’ll set you back about €1.40.

If you’re looking to explore Athens at your own pace, hop-on hop-off buses are a super easy option. You can get a 24-hour ticket, and they’ll take you to all the big spots like the Acropolis and the National Archaeological Museum. You can grab these tickets online or right on the bus.

Now, if you prefer not to stick to schedules and routes, and maybe want some exercise, Athens is super walkable. Areas like Plaka and Monastiraki are pretty much tailor-made for a leisurely stroll, with lots of stops for coffee or souvlaki. And let’s not forget the historic Anafiotika neighborhood; walking around there is like stepping back in time.

Taxis? Oh yes, they’re around. And not too pricey. You can hail them on the street, but if you’re more of an app person, you can use the “Beat” app; it’s the Greek version of Uber. Just keep in mind that sometimes, particularly during rush hours, finding a taxi might be challenging.
