About the city of Palermo: Your comprehensive guide
Imagine a place where vibrant markets, golden-domed churches, and centuries-old palaces create a tapestry of history and culture unlike any other. Begin your adventure at the stunning Norman Palace and its glittering Palatine Chapel, a masterpiece of Byzantine mosaics. Wander through bustling streets brimming with baroque architecture, sunlit piazzas, and lively street art. And don’t leave without savoring the flavors of local cuisine—from arancini to cannoli—that capture the essence of Sicily in every bite.
Gastronomy: Delicious Discoveries
Start your culinary journey with arancini, those crispy, saffron-infused rice balls filled with ragu, mozzarella, or ham, and the ideal street snack found at every corner. Next, try panelle, thin, fried chickpea fritters often served in sesame-studded bread, a Palermo favorite. For pasta lovers, pasta con le sarde is a must—spaghetti or bucatini tossed with sardines, wild fennel, raisins, and pine nuts, creating a savory-sweet flavor unique to Sicily.
On the sweeter side, indulge in cannoli, crunchy pastry shells filled with sweet ricotta and often dusted with pistachios or chocolate. Don't miss cassata, a vibrant sponge cake layered with ricotta and candied fruit, or the lesser-known gelo di mellone, a refreshing watermelon pudding, perfect for hot days. Pair your meals with a glass of Nero d’Avola, Sicily’s bold red wine, or try a refreshing zibibbo for dessert.

Transportation and getting around the city
From Palermo Airport, the easiest way to reach the city center is by taking the Prestia e Comandè bus, which runs frequently and drops you right in the heart of Palermo in about 50 minutes. Taxis are also available, though they’re more expensive, and make sure to agree on a fare in advance. Once in the city, you’ll find public buses operated by AMAT as a convenient way to get around, with tickets available at kiosks or on your phone through the AMAT app. Palermo’s historic center is very walkable, so many travelers enjoy exploring on foot, especially the areas around Quattro Canti, the Palermo Cathedral, and Vucciria Market.
If you prefer a sightseeing tour, hop-on-hop-off buses are a popular option and tickets can be purchased online or directly at stops around the city’s main attractions.
When it comes to money, the local currency is the Euro, and while cards are accepted in most restaurants and shops, it’s wise to carry some cash for smaller purchases or market visits. For electricity, bring an adapter for Type C or Type F sockets if needed, as Italy operates on 230V.
