About the city of Toulouse: Your comprehensive guide

Step into a city where vibrant pink-hued architecture meets a lively cultural scene, and let the majestic Basilica of Saint-Sernin guide your exploration. Known for its atmospheric squares and sunlit riverbanks, this destination blends rich history with modern charm. Wander through bustling markets, marvel at aerospace marvels, and end your day with local delicacies like cassoulet and foie gras. The warmth of its people and the allure of its cuisine make every corner unforgettable.

Gastronomy: Delicious Discoveries

For anyone exploring the flavors of this city, start with cassoulet, a hearty bean and meat stew that originated in the region. Typically made with duck confit, pork, and Toulouse sausage, it’s a must-try dish for an authentic taste of the southwest. Another essential is saucisse de Toulouse, a fresh, coarse-ground sausage often served with lentils or grilled on its own, perfect for a rich, savory bite.

Duck is a local specialty, especially as magret de canard, duck breast, or confit de canard, duck leg slow-cooked in its own fat, both showcasing the region’s flair for robust, comforting dishes. Foie gras is also a regional delicacy, often served with a sweet onion or fig jam to balance its richness. If you’re in the mood for something lighter, sample the local salade Landaise, a fresh mix topped with duck gizzards, walnuts, and crispy croutons.

Finish on a sweet note with fénétra, a traditional pastry made with apricots, almonds, and a hint of lemon, or sample pastis gascon, a flaky, wine-scented pastry filled with apple or prunes. Pair your meals with a glass of local wine from Fronton or a sip of Armagnac, the regional brandy known for its complex flavors.

On each spot of the audio guide, we’ll point out nearby top-rated restaurants according to Google users' opinions, so you can enjoy the best local dining experiences.

Transportation and getting around the city

Getting from the airport to the city center is a breeze. You can take the airport shuttle bus, which runs every 20 minutes and drops you off at key spots, including the main train station, in about 20 minutes. If you prefer the tram, Line T2 is a smooth and affordable option, though it’s slightly slower. Taxis are always available right outside the terminal, and rides to the city take around 15-20 minutes.

Within the city, the metro and tram network make getting around easy and efficient. The metro has two main lines that cover the major districts, and trams will take you to most areas you’d want to explore. If you’re using public transport frequently, grab a day pass or multi-day pass for unlimited rides, available at the ticket machines or at Tisséo stores near major stations.

Taxis are convenient and can be found at ranks around the city center, but ride-hailing apps also work well here and may offer slightly lower fares. You’ll also find that central Toulouse is extremely walkable, especially the historic center and around Place du Capitole, so take advantage of the city’s scenic streets and pedestrian areas. There’s also a hop-on-hop-off tour bus for a more relaxed way to see the main sights—tickets can be bought directly on board or at local tourist information offices.

For practicalities, the local currency is the euro, and most places accept cards, though it’s always handy to have a small amount of cash for small purchases or local markets. Electrical sockets are type C and E, the standard European style, so bring an adapter if needed for your devices.
