About the city of Warsaw: Your comprehensive guide

A city that masterfully blends rich history with modern energy, Poland’s capital offers travelers a captivating experience at every turn. Wander through its iconic Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where colorful facades and cobblestone streets whisper stories of resilience and rebirth. Don’t miss a visit to the majestic Royal Castle and the vibrant atmosphere of Łazienki Park. Be sure to explore the city's vibrant culinary scene, with delicious pierogi and hearty dishes that showcase Polish tradition at its finest.

Gastronomy: Delicious Discoveries

Pierogi are a must-try in Warsaw. These traditional Polish dumplings come with a variety of fillings, from meat and mushrooms to sweet options like fruit or cheese. Another staple is bigos, a hearty hunter’s stew made from sauerkraut, fresh cabbage, and various meats. For something lighter, try barszcz, a beetroot soup often served with a dollop of sour cream or uszka (small dumplings). Żurek, a sour rye soup, is also popular, especially in colder months, and is sometimes served with a boiled egg and sausage. If you're a meat lover, don't miss kotlet schabowy, a breaded pork cutlet that’s similar to a schnitzel. On the sweeter side, Warsaw is famous for its paczki, deep-fried doughnuts filled with jam or custard.

To accompany these dishes, try Polish beer or traditional vodka, with żubrówka (bison grass vodka) being a standout. For a non-alcoholic option, kompot—a stewed fruit drink—is often served with meals.

On each spot of the audio guide, we'll point out the nearest recommended restaurants, based on Google users’ reviews.

Transportation and getting around the city

When you arrive in Warsaw, getting from Chopin Airport to the city center is pretty straightforward. You can take the SKM train, which is affordable and gets you to the main station in about 20 minutes. There’s also bus number 175, a direct route to downtown. If you prefer comfort, taxis are available right outside the terminal, but make sure you use licensed ones like Ele Taxi or iTaxi to avoid overpaying.

Once in the city, public transport is efficient and easy to use. The tram and bus systems are well-connected, and you can buy tickets at kiosks, ticket machines, or via mobile apps. The metro, though small with just two lines, is fast and covers important areas. If you enjoy sightseeing, hop-on-hop-off tour buses are great for a hassle-free way to explore major landmarks, and you can buy tickets online or at tourist spots around the city.

Warsaw is also very walkable, especially in neighborhoods like the Old Town and along the Vistula River. Just make sure to wear comfy shoes as the cobblestones can be tricky. If you need to get somewhere quickly, taxis and ride-hailing apps like Bolt are reliable, and the fares are generally reasonable.

For practical tips, the local currency is the Polish złoty (PLN), and while credit cards are widely accepted, it’s a good idea to carry some cash for smaller shops or markets. Poland uses type E and F power sockets, so pack a European plug adapter if needed.
